Dental Insurance and Braces

Paying for braces can be expensive. Finding insurance to pay for them can be hard too, but it will undoubtedly save you money over time. The number of companies that cover braces is small, but they are out there. Even if you do have insurance, expect to spend at least some money out-of-pocket to pay for them.

Most companies that pay for braces charge a higher premium due to the increased level of service. These companies also have higher copayments, the part you are responsible for paying. This may leave you unsure as to how much you’ll actually be spending, and this amount can vary by your circumstances and if more than one person in your family needs braces.

You should read the “fine print” on your policy before you buy it. This will let you know the policy’s limitations and exclusions. Take your time and read through it thoroughly, to eliminate unpleasant surprises later. Look for those little details that your company may not be so quick to tell you.

Consider what the lifetime limit on the policy is. If it has a low maximum it can be run through pretty quickly, and if more than one person needs braces you’ll definitely be paying a lot yourself. Most people can’t afford to pay full price for braces, so make sure that your policy is big enough to cover it all. Looking over your policy might lead you to simply upgrade it so that orthodontia like braces are covered. This is often cheaper than buying a totally new policy, and will let you retain the services of a company you already know and trust.
