Dental Insurance for Braces

by InsuranceExpert on May 2, 2009

Before having braces put on your teenager, you first need to make sure that your dental insurance includes braces. If you do find out that your dental insurance does not cover braces, you may need to shop around for a dental insurance that will cover braces.

There is one other way to pay for braces other than insurance and that is with a dental discount plan. The dental discount plan is not actually dental insurance. If you buy a dental discount plan, the dentist within the network will offer their services to you at a lower rate. Doing this may save you anywhere from 30-50% for your teenager’s braces. A dental discount plan may not give you the utmost coverage for braces, but it certainly is much more affordable than paying for them out of pocket. The dental discount plan is, also, great when shopping around for dental insurance as it is more of a hassle than anything.

Having dental insurance that covers braces is the same as any other insurance plan. You will more than likely have to meet your deductible or pay your co-pay if your deductible is met. If you do have a co-pay, be sure to ask if the co-pay is due at every visit or if the co-pay is only for the first visit for the braces. Once you know this, you will know exactly how much to budget with the orthodontic.

The last thing you need to check for if you have, or are shopping for, dental insurance is the possible exclusions. Some insurance companies will not cover braces that are not medically necessary. For example, braces that are considered cosmetic will not be covered with your dental insurance plan. If you face this, talk to the orthodontic about coding the procedure as medically necessary.

If your employer offers dental insurance with braces, take it. Braces can cost as much as $5,000, so having the insurance will definitely save you some money. If you can’t get dental insurance for braces, then consider doing the dental discount plan. Keep your eyes open to get the best dental care for you and your family.
