Reporting a Dental Insurance Scam

by InsuranceExpert on May 21, 2009

If you aren’t quite sure how to report a dental insurance fraud or scam, you should review your insurance policy documentation. Reporting scams may seem like a waste of time and effort, but it will save you and a lot of other people quite a bit of money in the long run.

Most people are honest, and they are just trying to find good dental coverage at a fair price. By the same token, there are a number of people who are a bit shady and they try to rip off the insurance companies with a laundry list of scams and tricks, all in the effort to get free services or cash reimbursements for services they never got. These schemes cost honest people hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in the form of higher insurance premiums.

Anyone who thinks they know of a scam should report it, because after all the scammer is ripping you off, too. As companies crack down on scammers, premiums will correspondingly come down. Knowing that an action you take can directly effect how much you pay can be a powerful incentive to “do the right thing”. Also, many companies offer cash rewards for those who report fraudulent activity.

Knowing what scams are making the rounds is important. You might be totally honest, but that doesn’t really say a lot about whether other people insured by your company are honest as well. The scammers try to defraud the insurance companies, which in turn causes them to be less willing to provide new services. To keep this from happening, you should report fraud wherever you see it.

If you are tempted to try to cheat the system yourself, don’t do it. People are sent to jail all the time for participating in insurance scams. Knowing this serves as a deterrent, hopefully. If everyone who’s covered plays by the rules, everyone will benefit in the form of lower premiums, and increased services.
